Following the tremendous success of the Children of China book, Children of South Africa was launched to coincide with the FIFA World Cup in 2010. The book was supported by Guess, Visa, Apple, Coca-Cola, DHL and other courier companies, several banks and many other major corporates.
It was launched in Australia by Frank Lowy, one of the richest and most powerful men in Australia.
Unsung Heroes, the documentary of the making of the book for Children of South Africa was screened to acclaim at a major Australian film festival, raising enough money to take care of one of the unsung heroes in the documentary for up to eight years.
All the profits from Children of South Africa were donated to the Afrika Tikkun charity. Nelson Mandela was the chief patron of this charity and wrote a message for the book. The donated money was used by Afrika Tikkun to pay for sports equipment for 25,000 children in six South African townships. Afrika Tikkun has used further donated funds to pay for sports coaches for the children in these townships.
Sir Bob Geldof and Leah Tutu (Desmond Tutu’s wife) wrote messages for this book.
